Zvezda 1/35 T-62M Soviet Main Battle Tank # 3679
The T-62M is an upgraded version of the Soviet T-62 main battle tank, originally introduced in the early 1960s as a successor to the T-55.
Developed during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the T-62M modernization programme was designed to extend the service life of the tank while improving its protection, firepower and battlefield effectiveness.
One of the most noticeable features of the T-62M is its additional armour protection.
The upgrade introduced reinforced turret and hull armour, including the distinctive “Brow” armour plate mounted on the front of the turret, designed to improve resistance against anti-tank weapons.
The tank also received improved side skirts and internal protection upgrades to increase survivability on the battlefield.
The T-62M retained the tank’s powerful 115 mm smoothbore gun, which was the first of its kind to be used on a production tank.
The modernization package also added improved fire-control equipment, including a laser rangefinder and the ability to fire guided anti-tank missiles through the main gun.
Additional improvements included a more powerful engine, enhanced suspension and updated night-fighting equipment.
Although later tanks such as the T-72 and T-80 eventually replaced it in frontline service, the T-62M continued to serve with Soviet and later Russian forces, as well as with numerous other countries around the world.
Its distinctive armour upgrades and Cold War heritage make the T-62M a fascinating subject for military historians and scale modelling enthusiasts alike.
