The M4A1(76)W Sherman was an upgraded version of the classic American M4 Sherman tank, featuring a cast hull and a more powerful 76mm M1 gun.
Introduced in 1944, this variant was designed to address the growing threat of heavily armored German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger.
The “76” referred to its long-barreled 76mm gun, which provided significantly improved armor penetration compared to the earlier 75mm version.
The “W” indicated the addition of wet ammunition stowage—an internal safety feature that reduced the risk of ammunition fires when hit.
Powered by a Continental R975 radial engine, the M4A1(76)W maintained good mobility and reliability across varied terrain.
Used extensively in Northwest Europe and later in the Pacific, the M4A1(76)W balanced firepower, speed, and ease of production.
While still outgunned by some German tanks, it became a dependable workhorse of Allied armored forces in the final push toward victory.
