The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21F-13 — NATO reporting name “Fishbed-C” — was the first true production and combat-ready variant of the legendary MiG-21 family.
Developed in the late 1950s by the Soviet design bureau OKB Mikoyan-Gurevich, the F-13 (F = “Forsirovannyy,” or “Uprated”) introduced the combination of delta-wing aerodynamics, afterburning turbojet power, and supersonic agility that made the MiG-21 one of the most widely used jet fighters in history.
Powered by the Tumansky R-11F-300 turbojet, the MiG-21F-13 could achieve speeds exceeding Mach 2 (2,175 km/h) and climb rapidly to interception altitudes.
It was the first MiG-21 variant fitted with a radar-ranging gunsight and armed with two K-13 (AA-2 “Atoll”) air-to-air missiles, complemented by a single 30 mm NR-30 cannon mounted in the lower fuselage — a simple but lethal weapons setup designed for short, decisive engagements.
Despite its relatively primitive avionics by Western standards, the MiG-21F-13 earned respect for its speed, climb rate, and reliability.
It saw extensive service across the Warsaw Pact and was exported globally, serving in the air forces of nations from the Middle East to Asia and Africa.
During the 1960s, it was at the cutting edge of Soviet fighter design and a direct counterpart to Western contemporaries like the F-104 Starfighter and Mirage III.
The EFKÁ / MiG-21F-13 remains an enduring symbol of Cold War air power — sleek, fast, and unforgiving — a pioneering aircraft that set the stage for decades of MiG-21 evolution.
