The Curtiss P-40K Warhawk was a later development of the famous American fighter aircraft that served extensively during the early and mid-stages of the Second World War.

Built to improve high-altitude performance and handling, the P-40K featured an upgraded Allison V-1710 engine and a distinctive enlarged vertical stabiliser to counter torque and enhance directional stability.

Entering service in 1942, the P-40K saw action in a variety of theatres, including North Africa, the China-Burma-India theatre, and the Pacific.

Known for its rugged construction and reliability, the Warhawk was well suited to harsh operating conditions, often flying from rough airstrips where more delicate aircraft struggled.

Armed with six .50 calibre machine guns, the P-40K was capable of both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions.

While it lacked the high-altitude performance of some contemporaries, it proved highly effective in low to medium altitude engagements, where its durability and firepower gave pilots confidence in combat.

The P-40 series gained legendary status with units such as the Flying Tigers, and the P-40K represents a key evolution in the aircraft’s development.

With its distinctive lines and operational versatility, it remains a popular and characterful subject for scale modellers.
