During the 1960s and 1970s, small neighbourhood greengrocers were a common sight throughout Saigon, forming an essential part of daily civilian life during the Vietnam War era.
Often family-run and open to the street, these shops supplied fresh produce to local residents, soldiers, and market traders alike, continuing to operate despite the surrounding instability of the period.
Typically housed in simple shopfronts or market stalls, Saigon greengrocers displayed baskets and crates of vegetables, fruit, and herbs arranged directly onto pavements or wooden counters.
Hand-painted signs, woven baskets, tarpaulin awnings, and improvised shelving gave each shop its own distinctive character, reflecting both practicality and local craftsmanship.
Set against a backdrop of military presence, traffic, and everyday civilian activity, such shops became an iconic element of urban Vietnam during the war years.
