Hasegawa 1/72 Mitsubishi F-1 # 03
The Mitsubishi F-1 was Japan’s first domestically developed supersonic jet fighter-bomber, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s post-war aviation industry.
Entering service in the late 1970s with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, the F-1 represented a transition from licensed production of foreign aircraft to indigenous design and manufacturing.
Developed from the Mitsubishi T-2 advanced trainer, the F-1 retained a similar airframe but was extensively modified for combat operations.
It featured a strengthened structure, upgraded avionics, and the ability to carry a wide range of ordnance.
Powered by twin turbofan engines, the aircraft could achieve supersonic speeds while maintaining stability and control at low altitude—an essential trait for its primary strike role.
The F-1 was specifically designed with maritime defence in mind. One of its key capabilities was the deployment of anti-ship missiles, allowing it to play a crucial role in defending Japan’s surrounding waters.
This focus reflected Japan’s strategic priorities during the Cold War, where the ability to counter naval threats was paramount.
Armament included a built-in cannon, air-to-air missiles for self-defence, and various ground-attack munitions.
Despite its relatively modest payload compared to larger strike aircraft, the F-1 was valued for its precision and reliability.
Although eventually replaced by more advanced multirole fighters such as the Mitsubishi F-2, the F-1 served with distinction for over two decades.
It laid the groundwork for Japan’s modern aerospace capabilities and demonstrated the country’s growing confidence in designing and producing sophisticated combat aircraft.
Today, the Mitsubishi F-1 is remembered as a pioneering aircraft—bridging the gap between Japan’s post-war recovery and its emergence as a technologically advanced aviation nation.
