Hasegawa 1/72 Mitsubishi T-2 # 04
The Mitsubishi T-2 was Japan’s first domestically developed supersonic aircraft, designed as an advanced jet trainer for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
Entering service in the mid-1970s, it marked a major step forward in Japan’s post-war aviation industry, demonstrating the country’s growing ability to design and produce modern military aircraft.
Inspired in part by the Anglo-French SEPECAT Jaguar, the T-2 featured a sleek, twin-engine layout with side-mounted air intakes and a tandem two-seat cockpit for instructor and student.
It was capable of supersonic flight, allowing pilots to train under realistic combat conditions—something previous subsonic trainers could not provide.
Powered by two turbofan engines, the T-2 delivered strong performance both at high speed and low altitude.
Its handling characteristics made it well-suited for advanced flight training, including weapons delivery, formation flying, and tactical manoeuvres.
Although primarily a trainer, the aircraft could be armed with a cannon, rockets, and bombs, enabling it to perform light attack duties when required.
The T-2 also became well known through its use by the JASDF’s aerobatic display team, where its speed and agility were showcased in precision flying routines.
Its role extended beyond training, helping to build pilot proficiency for Japan’s frontline fighter units during the Cold War era.
Importantly, the T-2 served as the foundation for the development of the Mitsubishi F-1, Japan’s first indigenous strike aircraft.
This evolution highlighted the T-2’s robust design and adaptability.
Retired in the early 2000s, the Mitsubishi T-2 remains a landmark aircraft in Japanese aviation history—symbolising the country’s return to advanced aerospace engineering and its commitment to self-reliance in defence technology.
