French Light Infantry (Infanterie Légère) played a vital role in Napoleon’s army during the early years of the Napoleonic Wars, particularly during the 1805 campaign that culminated in the Battle of Austerlitz.

Trained for flexibility and initiative, these troops were used for skirmishing, reconnaissance, and rapid manoeuvre ahead of the main battle line.

Equipped with the Charleville musket and bayonet, French Light Infantry wore distinctive uniforms featuring shorter-tailed coats, shako headgear, and practical field equipment designed for mobility.

Voltigeurs and tirailleurs operated in open order, harassing enemy formations, screening advances, and exploiting broken ground where line infantry were less effective.

Their speed, discipline, and battlefield independence made French Light Infantry an essential component of Napoleon’s tactical system.

In 1805, they exemplified the aggressive and adaptable fighting style that helped the Grande Armée achieve decisive victories against Austria and its allies.
