The Macedonian Cavalry formed the elite striking arm of Alexander the Great’s army and was instrumental in his rapid and decisive conquests across the ancient world.

Drawn largely from the Macedonian nobility, these highly trained horsemen fought as heavy shock cavalry, delivering decisive blows at critical moments of battle.

Armed with the long xyston lance and supported by swords for close combat, Macedonian Cavalry wore protective armour and helmets while maintaining exceptional mobility.

Fighting in tightly controlled formations, they were renowned for their discipline, courage, and ability to execute complex manoeuvres at speed.

Most famous among them were the Companion Cavalry (Hetairoi), who fought at Alexander’s side in battles such as Granicus, Issus, and Gaugamela.

Their ability to exploit enemy weaknesses and shatter opposing lines made them a decisive force and a key factor in the creation of one of history’s greatest empires.
