The Douglas A-4N Skyhawk “Ayit” (Early) served as one of the Israeli Air Force’s most iconic light attack aircraft.
Developed from the proven A-4M, the A-4N was tailored to Israel’s specific needs, featuring enhanced avionics, improved engine performance, and distinctive extended tailpipes for infrared signature reduction.
Nicknamed “Ayit”—Hebrew for “Eagle”—this compact yet powerful jet played a vital role in close air support, ground attack, and training missions throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
This “Early” variant captures the Skyhawk in its first IAF configuration, often seen in the classic three-tone desert camouflage of sand, green, and light blue-grey.
The model highlights its unique dorsal avionics hump, underwing stores, and characteristic drop tanks. Agile, rugged, and instantly recognisable, the A-4N “Ayit” stands as a testament to Israel’s innovative adaptations of American aircraft and remains a favourite subject for Cold War and Middle Eastern aviation enthusiasts alike.
