The Gotha Go 244B-1 was a twin-engined German military transport aircraft developed during World War II.
It was a powered version of the Gotha Go 242 glider, designed by Gothaer Waggonfabrik. The Go 244B-1 variant was fitted with two Gnome-Rhône 14M radial engines, which offered improved reliability and performance over earlier versions equipped with captured or less suitable powerplants.
Intended to serve as a light transport, the Go 244B-1 retained the basic airframe of the Go 242, including its boxy fuselage and high-mounted wings, which allowed for easy cargo loading and unloading.
It could carry up to 23 troops or equivalent cargo and was used in limited numbers primarily on the Eastern Front and in North Africa.
However, its vulnerability to enemy fire, particularly due to the lack of armor and its relatively slow speed, led to it being withdrawn from front-line service in favor of more robust transport aircraft like the Junkers Ju 52.
Despite its limited success, the Go 244B-1 reflected Germany's effort to quickly convert glider designs into powered aircraft to meet the Luftwaffe’s logistical needs during the war.
