The Su-22UM3K is a two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter-bomber used by the Polish Air Force.
It is a part of the Su-22 Fitter family, developed by the Soviet Union's Sukhoi Design Bureau during the Cold War.
The Su-22UM3K variant, specifically, is a modernized trainer version with combat capabilities, allowing for both pilot training and ground-attack missions.
Key points about the Su-22UM3K in the Polish Air Force:
Service Entry: The Su-22 entered service with the Polish Air Force in the mid-1980s. A total of about 110 aircraft were delivered to Poland, with the UM3K model being a subset of the fleet.
Role: While the Su-22UM3K is primarily a training aircraft due to its dual-seating arrangement, it retains the ability to carry out air-to-ground attacks using bombs, rockets, and guided missiles. It can also perform reconnaissance missions.
Performance: The aircraft is equipped with a Lyulka AL-21F-3 turbojet engine, providing enough thrust for high-speed, low-level attacks. Its variable-sweep wing design allows it to adapt to different combat situations, providing stability at lower speeds and high maneuverability in dogfights.
Modernization: In the 2010s, the Polish Air Force decided to modernize a portion of its Su-22 fleet, including the UM3K models, to extend their service life until at least the mid-2020s. The upgrades included improved avionics, navigation systems, and communication tools.
Current Status: Despite being an older platform, the Su-22, including the UM3K variant, remains an important asset in the Polish Air Force for both pilot training and light attack missions.
However, they are expected to be gradually replaced by more modern multirole aircraft in the coming years.
