Kovozavody Prostejov 1/72 North-American P-51D-5 Mustang '357th FG' # 72439
The North American P-51D-5 Mustang was one of the most successful long-range escort fighters of the Second World War and played a crucial role in establishing Allied air superiority over Europe.
Powered by the Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Mustang combined exceptional speed, long range, and superb high-altitude performance.
The P-51D variant introduced the famous bubble canopy, giving pilots greatly improved all-round visibility, along with a redesigned wing carrying six .50 calibre machine guns, making it both a formidable escort fighter and an effective air-to-air combat aircraft.
The 357th Fighter Group (357th FG) was one of the most famous Mustang units of the United States Army Air Forces.
Operating from RAF Leiston in Suffolk as part of the Eighth Air Force, the group flew long-range escort missions protecting American bomber formations during raids deep into Germany and occupied Europe.
The 357th FG quickly gained an outstanding combat record and produced several high-scoring aces.
Aircraft from the group were particularly well known for their striking nose and spinner colour schemes, which varied by squadron and added distinctive visual appeal to their polished natural metal finishes.
These colourful markings, combined with the sleek lines of the Mustang, have made 357th FG aircraft among the most recognisable and popular subjects for aviation enthusiasts and scale modellers.
Representing a legendary fighter unit and one of the most capable Allied fighters of the war, the P-51D-5 Mustang of the 357th Fighter Group remains an enduring symbol of the air campaign over Europe and a classic aircraft of the World War II era.
