The SAAB Safir was a versatile light aircraft developed in Sweden during the late 1940s and widely used throughout the Nordic region as a primary training and liaison aircraft.

Designed by the Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab, the Safir was valued for its reliable handling, sturdy construction, and excellent visibility, making it ideal for pilot training.

Entering service in the early 1950s, the Safir became a standard training aircraft for several Nordic air forces, including Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.

These countries used the aircraft to train new pilots in the fundamentals of flight before progressing to more advanced military aircraft.

The aircraft featured a low-wing monoplane design with a fully enclosed cockpit and seating for two or three crew members depending on the version.

Its forgiving flight characteristics allowed instructors to safely introduce students to manoeuvres such as navigation, aerobatics, and instrument flying.

The Swedish Air Force operated several variants of the Safir, where it served as a primary trainer for many years.

In Norway and Denmark, the aircraft performed similar roles, helping to train generations of pilots who would later fly more advanced fighters and jet aircraft.

Powered by a piston engine and designed for simplicity and reliability, the Safir proved to be both economical and durable.

Many examples remained in service for decades, and a number of aircraft later passed into civilian ownership where they continued to fly as private and historic aircraft.
