Kovozavody Prostejov 1/72 SAAB Safir "In Swedish Services # 72523
The SAAB Safir was an important training aircraft used by the Swedish Air Force, where it served under the designation Sk 50.
Developed shortly after the Second World War by the Swedish manufacturer Saab, the Safir was designed as a reliable and easy-to-fly aircraft intended for pilot training, liaison duties, and general utility tasks.
The aircraft first flew in 1945 and entered Swedish military service in the early 1950s. Its low-wing monoplane design, enclosed cockpit, and excellent visibility made it well suited for training new pilots.
The Safir was typically operated with an instructor and student seated side by side or in tandem depending on the variant, allowing effective communication and instruction during flight training.
Within the Swedish Air Force, the Safir played a key role in the early stages of pilot training.
Student pilots learned fundamental flying skills such as navigation, take-offs and landings, aerobatics, and instrument flying before moving on to more advanced aircraft in Sweden’s growing jet-powered air force.
The aircraft was powered by a reliable piston engine and was known for its stable flight characteristics and forgiving handling, which made it ideal for inexperienced pilots.
Safirs often appeared in highly visible training colours, including the bright yellow schemes commonly used by Swedish military training aircraft.
The SAAB Safir remained in Swedish service for many years and trained generations of pilots who would go on to fly aircraft such as the Saab 29 Tunnan, Saab 32 Lansen, and Saab 35 Draken.
Even after retirement from military service, many Safirs continued flying in civilian hands, preserving the legacy of one of Sweden’s most successful training aircraft.
