Kovozavody Prostejov 1/72 SAAB Safir "In Civilian Services" # 72522
The SAAB Safir proved to be not only an excellent military training aircraft but also a highly successful aircraft in civilian service.
After its introduction in the late 1940s, many Safirs were operated by flying clubs, private owners, and aviation schools across Europe and beyond.
Designed by the Swedish manufacturer Saab, the Safir featured a sturdy low-wing monoplane design with excellent stability and forgiving flight characteristics.
These qualities made it particularly well suited for pilot training, recreational flying, and general aviation roles.
Many aircraft that originally served with military air forces—including those from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Austria—were later sold to civilian operators after retirement.
Once in private hands, Safirs were often repainted in colourful civil schemes and registered with civilian aviation authorities, where they continued to serve as training aircraft, touring planes, and historic aviation examples.
The Safir’s spacious cockpit and good visibility made it comfortable for both instructors and passengers, while its reliable piston engine ensured economical operation.
These characteristics helped the aircraft remain popular with flying clubs and aviation enthusiasts for decades.
Today, the SAAB Safir is a respected classic aircraft within the historic aviation community.
Many examples remain airworthy and regularly appear at airshows and fly-ins, where their elegant design and smooth flying qualities continue to impress pilots and spectators alike.
The Safir’s long and varied career in civilian aviation demonstrates the versatility of this Swedish aircraft, which successfully transitioned from military training duties to becoming a cherished part of the classic aircraft world.
