The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb (Late) was a refined and widely used variant of Britain’s iconic fighter, developed by Supermarine during the middle years of the Second World War.

Building on the success of earlier Mk.Vb aircraft, late-production versions incorporated a number of improvements aimed at maintaining effectiveness against increasingly capable enemy fighters.

Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 series engine, the Mk.Vb delivered strong overall performance, particularly at low to medium altitudes.

While newer enemy aircraft began to challenge its superiority at higher altitudes, the Spitfire’s excellent manoeuvrability and responsiveness ensured it remained a formidable opponent in combat.

Late Mk.Vb aircraft often featured modifications such as clipped wingtips to improve roll rate at lower altitudes, as well as tropical filters for operations in harsh environments like North Africa.

These adaptations highlighted the aircraft’s versatility and its ability to operate effectively across multiple theatres of war.

Armament typically consisted of two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns in the “b” wing configuration, providing a strong balance of firepower for both air-to-air combat and ground attack roles.

The Mk.Vb was employed in a wide range of missions, including interception, escort duties, fighter sweeps, and close support operations.

Operated extensively by the Royal Air Force and numerous Allied air forces, the Spitfire Mk.Vb (Late) played a vital role during a transitional period in the air war.

Despite the arrival of more advanced aircraft, it remained a dependable and effective fighter, contributing significantly to Allied air operations until it was gradually superseded by later Spitfire variants.
