The BAC 1-11-500, also known as the Super One-Eleven, was the short-bodied, higher-performance development of Britain’s successful short-haul jet airliner.

Featuring a reduced fuselage length, improved hot-and-high performance, and excellent runway flexibility, the -500 series proved especially attractive to airlines operating from regional airports and challenging environments.

In UK service, the aircraft became closely associated with Monarch Airlines and Debonair Airways, where it was used on charter and scheduled routes throughout Europe.

Its brisk climb, robust design, and distinctive rear-mounted engines made it well suited to short sectors and frequent turnarounds, while its clean lines and classic 1960s jet styling gave it strong ramp presence.

Beyond Europe, the BAC 1-11-500 also served with Philippine Airlines, operating in tropical conditions where reliability and performance were essential.

Across these operators, the type wore a variety of colourful liveries that reflected both the golden age of British charter aviation and the global reach of the One-Eleven design.

With its iconic T-tail, rear-engine layout, and broad operator appeal, the BAC 1-11-500 remains a much-loved classic jet and an excellent subject for modellers interested in civil aviation history.
