Roman sailors were the backbone of the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire’s naval power, playing a crucial role in securing trade routes, supporting military campaigns, and projecting authority across the Mediterranean—often referred to by the Romans as Mare Nostrum (“Our Sea”).
