The Aichi B7A2 “Grace” was one of the most advanced carrier-based aircraft developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II.

Conceived as a combination dive-bomber and torpedo bomber, the B7A2 showcased cutting-edge design features that put it on par with the best Allied counterparts—if not ahead in many respects.

Powered by the powerful Nakajima Homare 11 radial engine, the B7A2 boasted a top speed of over 340 mph and an impressive operational range.

Its large, robust airframe featured folding wings for carrier storage, and it could carry either a single torpedo or up to 1,000 kg of bombs.

The Grace also had strong defensive armament, including a rear-mounted 13 mm machine gun operated by the radio operator/gunner.

Despite its promising performance and versatility, the B7A2 was hampered by Japan’s declining industrial capacity and the loss of many aircraft carriers by the time it entered service in 1944.

As a result, only a small number were produced, and it saw limited operational use from land bases.

Sleek, powerful, and ahead of its time, the Aichi B7A2 Grace remains a fascinating “what-if” of Japanese naval aviation — a formidable warplane that came too late to alter the course of the Pacific War.
