Trumpeter 1/35 Upgrade & Conversion Kit for Dicker Max # 06602
The 10.5cm K.Pz.Sfl.IVa, better known by its nickname “Dicker Max” (“Fat Max”), was a German experimental self-propelled gun developed during the early years of the Second World War.
Designed as a heavy tank destroyer, it was intended to provide long-range firepower capable of engaging heavily armoured targets, particularly in anticipation of encounters with fortified positions and enemy heavy tanks.
Built on a modified chassis, the vehicle featured a large, open-topped fighting compartment housing a powerful 10.5cm gun.
This weapon offered impressive range and penetration for its time, allowing it to engage targets at distances beyond the effective reach of many contemporary tanks.
The gun’s size and recoil required a relatively bulky superstructure, giving the vehicle its distinctive appearance and nickname.
Only a small number of prototypes were produced, and these were deployed on the Eastern Front for combat testing.
While the “Dicker Max” demonstrated strong firepower and effectiveness against armoured targets, it also revealed several limitations.
Its open-top design left the crew vulnerable to artillery and air attack, and its size and weight reduced mobility, particularly in difficult terrain.
Despite its promising concept, the vehicle did not enter mass production, as German armoured doctrine and priorities shifted toward more versatile and practical designs.
Nevertheless, the 10.5cm K.Pz.Sfl.IVa “Dicker Max” remains an interesting example of early-war experimentation in self-propelled anti-tank weapons, showcasing the German focus on heavy firepower and long-range engagement.
