The Besson MB.411 was a compact French reconnaissance seaplane developed in the late 1930s for a highly specialised role—operation from submarines.

Designed to be carried aboard the large French submarine Surcouf, the MB.411 had to meet strict requirements for size, weight, and ease of storage, resulting in an aircraft that could be dismantled and housed within a watertight hangar.

Featuring a single-engine, high-wing configuration with twin floats, the MB.411 was intended for short-range reconnaissance missions, allowing the submarine to scout ahead, observe enemy movements, and extend its situational awareness beyond the horizon.

Once assembled and launched, the aircraft could provide valuable intelligence before returning to be recovered and stowed once more.

Due to the constraints of submarine operation, the MB.411 prioritised compactness and practicality over performance.

It was relatively slow and lightly armed, making it unsuitable for combat, but adequate for its intended scouting duties.

The process of assembling and deploying the aircraft, however, was time-consuming and limited its operational flexibility.

Although innovative in concept, the MB.411 saw only limited use, and the idea of submarine-borne aircraft proved challenging in practice.

Nevertheless, it remains a fascinating example of interwar experimentation, reflecting the creative efforts to expand the capabilities of naval forces through aviation.
