The Supermarine Seafang F.Mk.32 was one of the final and most advanced developments of the famous Spitfire lineage, designed as a high-performance carrier-based fighter for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm.

Developed from the land-based Supermarine Spiteful, the Seafang incorporated a number of improvements intended to adapt the powerful fighter for naval operations.

Unlike earlier navalised Spitfire variants such as the Seafire, the Seafang featured a redesigned laminar-flow wing derived from the Spiteful, giving it improved high-speed performance and handling.

The aircraft was also equipped with folding wings, a reinforced undercarriage, and an arrestor hook to allow operation from aircraft carriers.

One of the most distinctive features of the Seafang F.Mk.32 was its powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engine driving a contra-rotating propeller.

This advanced propeller system helped absorb the immense power of the Griffon engine while reducing torque effects, improving stability during take-off and carrier landings.

Armament consisted of four 20 mm cannon mounted in the wings, giving the aircraft considerable firepower for both air combat and naval strike missions.

The Seafang was designed to be one of the fastest piston-engine naval fighters of its era, capable of exceptional speed and climb performance.

Although the Seafang showed impressive capabilities during testing, it arrived at a time when jet aircraft were rapidly replacing piston-engine fighters.

As a result, only a small number were produced and the type never entered widespread operational service.

Despite its limited production, the Supermarine Seafang F.Mk.32 represents the final evolution of the legendary Spitfire family, combining advanced aerodynamics, immense engine power, and naval capability into one of the most sophisticated piston-engine fighters ever developed.
