The Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 was one of the most widely produced and heavily armed variants of Germany’s famous Bf 109 fighter.

Aircraft serving with Jagdgeschwader 300 (JG.300) became particularly notable for their role in the defence of Germany during the later years of the Second World War.

Formed in 1943, JG.300 was tasked with intercepting Allied night bombing raids over Germany.

The unit initially operated under the innovative “Wilde Sau” (Wild Boar) tactic, in which single-seat fighters such as the Bf 109 were used to attack bomber formations at night.

Pilots relied on searchlights, fires from bombed cities, and moonlight to visually identify their targets rather than using radar-equipped night fighters.

The Bf 109G-6 was well suited to this demanding role thanks to its powerful Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine, which provided strong climb performance and speed.

The aircraft was heavily armed with a 20 mm MG 151 cannon firing through the propeller hub and two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns mounted above the engine.

Some aircraft were also fitted with additional underwing gun pods to increase firepower against heavily defended bomber formations.

Aircraft of JG.300 often carried distinctive Reich Defence markings, including coloured fuselage bands and striking camouflage schemes.

Some machines featured darker upper surfaces or black undersides to aid night operations, giving them a unique appearance compared with standard daylight fighters.

Despite the increasingly difficult conditions faced by the Luftwaffe in the later war years, pilots of JG.300 achieved a number of successes against Allied bomber formations.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 of JG.300 therefore represents an important part of Germany’s desperate but determined aerial defence during the final stages of the conflict.
