The Fieseler Fi-167A-0 was a German carrier-borne torpedo bomber developed in the late 1930s for the planned aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin.

Designed by the Fieseler company, the aircraft was intended to serve with the Kriegsmarine’s naval aviation arm, providing torpedo attack and reconnaissance capabilities for Germany’s future carrier fleet.

The Fi-167 featured a robust biplane design, chosen for its excellent low-speed handling and short take-off and landing performance—essential qualities for operations from an aircraft carrier.

The aircraft also incorporated folding wings for easier storage aboard ship and strong landing gear to withstand the stresses of carrier operations.

One of its most remarkable characteristics was its ability to maintain controlled flight at extremely low speeds, which was particularly valuable during torpedo attack runs or carrier landings.

The aircraft was designed to carry a single aerial torpedo or a bomb load, making it suitable for anti-ship missions as well as ground attack roles.

Defensive armament included machine guns for the pilot and rear gunner, providing protection during operational sorties.

Despite its promising capabilities, the Fi-167 never entered full operational service.

Only a small number of A-0 pre-production aircraft were built before the Graf Zeppelin carrier project was cancelled, removing the need for a dedicated carrier torpedo bomber. Some aircraft were later used for experimental or secondary roles.

Although largely unknown compared with other aircraft of the period, the Fieseler Fi-167A-0 demonstrated excellent flying characteristics and is often considered one of the most capable carrier-based biplanes ever designed.

Its development reflects Germany’s brief but ambitious attempt to build a carrier aviation force before the project was ultimately abandoned.
