The Merkava Mk.2 is the second-generation main battle tank of the Israeli Defence Forces, developed in the early 1980s as an evolution of the original Merkava Mk.1.
Drawing on extensive combat experience, the Mk.2 incorporated significant improvements in crew protection, mobility, and firepower, ensuring it could meet the demands of modern warfare in the Middle East.
Retaining the Merkava’s distinctive front-mounted engine for enhanced crew survivability, the Mk.2 was equipped with improved spaced and composite armour, additional side skirts, and upgraded NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection.
It carried the proven 105 mm M68 rifled gun, capable of firing a wide range of ammunition types, supported by advanced fire-control systems for increased accuracy on the move.
Enhanced suspension and automotive components improved cross-country performance, while new tactical systems allowed for better coordination in armoured formations.
The Merkava Mk.2 saw extensive service during the Lebanon War of 1982 and subsequent security operations, demonstrating its resilience in both urban and open terrain combat.
Designed around the philosophy of crew safety and battlefield adaptability, the Merkava Mk.2 solidified Israel’s reputation for innovative tank design and laid the groundwork for future variants of this iconic MBT.
