The Hotchkiss H-35 Late Version was a French light tank developed in the mid-1930s and used during the early stages of the Second World War.

Designed by the French manufacturer Hotchkiss et Cie, the H-35 was originally intended as an infantry support tank, offering strong armour protection for its size, but limited speed and firepower.

The late version of the H-35 introduced a number of incremental improvements over the earlier production models.

Most notably, these included refinements to the suspension system for improved reliability, as well as minor enhancements to the engine and cooling systems.

While still powered by a relatively modest 78 hp engine, these updates helped to slightly improve overall mobility and operational performance in the field.

One of the defining characteristics of the H-35 was its cast armour construction, which provided excellent protection compared to many contemporary light tanks.

Its rounded hull and turret design helped deflect incoming fire, making it a surprisingly resilient vehicle despite its small size.

The tank was typically armed with a short-barrel 37mm SA18 gun and a coaxial 7.5mm machine gun, suitable for infantry support but less effective against more heavily armoured enemy vehicles.

Operated by a crew of two—a driver and a commander who also served as gunner and loader—the H-35 placed a heavy workload on its commander, which could impact combat effectiveness.

Despite this limitation, the tank saw widespread use during the Battle of France in 1940.

Following the French surrender, many H-35 tanks were captured and repurposed by German forces for secondary duties, training, and occupation roles.

Although quickly outclassed by more advanced designs, the Hotchkiss H-35 Late Version remains an important representation of early-war French armoured doctrine, combining strong defensive qualities with compact design in a vehicle built to support infantry on the battlefield.
