Gecko Models 1/35 Early Type British 4 Gallon Flimsies Petrol Tins Set # 0157
Before the widespread adoption of the jerrycan, British forces relied on 4-gallon petrol tins, commonly known as “flimsies,” to store and transport fuel.
These early containers were widely used during the inter-war period and the early years of the Second World War, becoming a familiar—if problematic—feature of British military logistics.
Constructed from thin pressed steel with soldered seams, flimsies were lightweight and cheap to manufacture but prone to leaking, splitting, and damage during handling and transport.
Their design made them difficult to stack securely, and fuel losses were common, especially in harsh environments such as North Africa, where heat and rough terrain exposed their shortcomings.
Despite their flaws, flimsies were produced in vast numbers and saw extensive service with British and Commonwealth forces, supplying fuel to vehicles, generators, and equipment during the critical early stages of the war.
Their operational weaknesses ultimately highlighted the need for a more robust container, leading to the adoption of the German-designed jerrycan concept by Allied forces.
For military modellers, Early Type British 4-Gallon Flimsies are an essential detail item, adding historical authenticity to early WWII logistics scenes, vehicle stowage, and supply depots.
