The Heinkel He-162A-1 Salamander was one of the most striking and unconventional jet fighters developed during the final stages of World War II.

Designed under the Volksjäger (“People’s Fighter”) programme, it was created to be fast, simple to produce, and capable of defending German airspace using limited resources.

Powered by a single BMW 003 turbojet mounted above the fuselage, the He-162 featured a highly distinctive design with twin tail fins and a streamlined, compact airframe.

Its lightweight construction made use of non-strategic materials such as wood, allowing for rapid production in the closing months of the war.

The A-1 variant was equipped with two powerful 30mm MK 108 cannons, delivering formidable firepower against Allied bombers.

However, the combination of heavy armament and the aircraft’s lightweight structure led to handling challenges, and the type saw only limited operational service before the end of the conflict.

For modellers, the He-162A-1 Salamander offers a truly unique subject.

Its unusual layout, late-war camouflage schemes, and historical significance make it an eye-catching addition to any aircraft collection.
