The Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB “Car Door” represents the early production form of one of the Royal Air Force’s most powerful and distinctive fighters of the Second World War.
Entering service in 1941–1942, the Typhoon was originally conceived as a high-performance interceptor to counter new German aircraft, but it soon found its true calling in the ground-attack role.
The nickname “Car Door” comes from its unique side-hinged cockpit doors, which resembled those of an automobile rather than the later sliding canopy.
This early cockpit design, combined with a heavily framed canopy, gave the aircraft a recognisable profile but limited pilot visibility compared to later “bubble-top” variants.
Powered by the formidable Napier Sabre engine, the Typhoon Mk.IB delivered exceptional low-altitude speed and performance.
Armed with four 20mm Hispano cannons, it possessed devastating firepower, making it highly effective against ground targets such as armoured vehicles, trains, and troop concentrations.
Although early models in 1942 faced reliability issues and structural concerns, continued development improved the aircraft’s effectiveness and durability.
While it struggled as a high-altitude interceptor, the Typhoon excelled at low-level operations, where its speed, strength, and heavy armament made it a formidable strike aircraft.
The “Car Door” variant represents this transitional phase—an aircraft evolving from an interceptor into one of the RAF’s most feared ground-attack platforms, paving the way for its later success in the close air support role across Europe.
