The Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, often referred to as the "Dora-9", was a high-performance German fighter aircraft introduced in the latter stages of World War II.
Developed as a response to the growing threat of high-altitude Allied bombers, the D-9 variant was a major evolution from earlier radial-engined Fw 190 models, featuring a liquid-cooled Jumo 213A V12 engine housed in an elongated nose, significantly altering the aircraft’s profile and performance characteristics.
The Mimetall “Broad Tail” version was a late-production variant built by the Mimetall factory, distinguished by its enlarged vertical tail fin and rudder.
This “broad tail” configuration was implemented to improve stability and control, especially during takeoff and landing, due to the increased torque of the Jumo engine and the extended fuselage.
Some aircraft also featured a tailwheel with a fixed strut and subtle differences in surface finish or camouflage specific to Mimetall production lines.
The Fw 190D-9 combined exceptional speed, climb rate, and firepower—typically equipped with two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns above the engine and two 20 mm MG 151 cannons in the wing roots.
Pilots praised its performance, and it proved to be a formidable adversary to Allied fighters such as the P-51 Mustang and Spitfire Mk XIV.
Though introduced too late and in too few numbers to alter the outcome of the war, the D-9 was arguably one of the finest piston-engined fighters fielded by the Luftwaffe.
