Linear-A 1/72 Napoleonic Wars French Engineers Crossing the Berezina Set 2# 148
The crossing of the Berezina River in November 1812 stands as one of the most dramatic and desperate episodes of Napoleon’s retreat from Russia.
With Russian forces closing in from multiple directions and winter tightening its grip, the remnants of the Grande Armée faced annihilation unless they could escape across the icy river.
At the heart of this extraordinary effort were the French military engineers, who performed a feat of remarkable skill and endurance under extreme conditions.
Working in freezing water, often up to their chests, they constructed two makeshift pontoon bridges using limited materials salvaged from the retreat.
Despite exhaustion, frostbite, and constant enemy pressure, they laboured continuously to keep the crossings open.
These bridges became the lifeline of the army. Soldiers, civilians, and camp followers streamed across while rearguard units fought desperately to hold off Russian attacks.
The engineers repeatedly repaired damage from ice and enemy fire, ensuring the bridges remained usable long enough for a significant portion of the army to escape.
Although the crossing came at a terrible cost, with many lives lost in the chaos and freezing conditions, the engineers’ actions prevented total destruction.
Their courage and sacrifice turned what could have been a complete catastrophe into a narrow and hard-fought survival, making the Berezina crossing a lasting symbol of resilience and determination in the face of overwhelming adversity.
