Wilusa (often identified with the later city of Ilios, or Troy) was an important kingdom in north-western Anatolia during the Late Bronze Age, closely associated with the wider region known as Arzawa.
Flourishing between roughly 1400 and 1200 BC, Wilusa occupied a strategic position near the Dardanelles, controlling key trade routes between the Aegean and the Black Sea, and serving as a cultural and political crossroads between the Hittite Empire and the Mycenaean world.
Hittite records refer to Wilusa as both an ally and, at times, a point of tension within the complex network of western Anatolian states.
Diplomatic texts and treaties suggest that Wilusa maintained a degree of autonomy while acknowledging Hittite influence, and its rulers were involved in regional disputes that occasionally drew in powerful neighbours.
The name “Wilusa” itself is widely considered by historians to be linguistically linked to “Ilios,” strengthening the long-standing association with the legendary city of Troy.
As part of the broader Arzawa lands, Wilusa contributed to a vibrant and dynamic region characterised by shifting alliances, trade, and occasional conflict.
The period between 1400 and 1200 BC saw increasing instability across the eastern Mediterranean, culminating in widespread upheaval at the end of the Bronze Age.
Within this context, Wilusa stands as a historically significant centre—one that bridges the gap between archaeological evidence and the enduring legends of the ancient world.
