Mars 1/72 German Machine Gun Team WWII # 72147
A German Machine Gun Team of WWII formed the backbone of a Wehrmacht infantry squad, built around the devastating firepower of the MG34 and later the MG42.
Unlike many armies that treated the machine gun as support for riflemen, German doctrine centred the entire squad around the machine gun itself — with riflemen protecting and supplying the gun crew.
The Weapon
The standard machine guns were:
- MG34 – Introduced before the war, precision-engineered and capable of sustained fire.
- MG42 – Introduced in 1942, famous for its extremely high rate of fire (around 1,200 rounds per minute) and distinctive tearing sound.
The MG42 in particular became one of the most feared infantry weapons of the war due to its reliability, ease of production, and overwhelming suppressive fire.
Team Composition
A typical German machine gun team consisted of:
- Gunner (Schütze 1) – Operated the MG34 or MG42.
- Assistant Gunner (Schütze 2) – Carried spare barrels and ammunition, assisted with reloads and barrel changes.
- Ammunition Bearers / Riflemen – Supplied belts of ammunition and provided local security.
The machine gun could be deployed on a bipod for mobile infantry use or mounted on a tripod for sustained defensive fire.
Battlefield Role
German infantry tactics relied heavily on machine gun dominance.
The MG team would establish a base of fire, pinning enemy troops in place while other soldiers manoeuvred. On defence, the weapon’s high rate of fire created deadly interlocking fields of fire.
From the deserts of North Africa to the forests of the Eastern Front and the hedgerows of Normandy, German machine gun teams played a decisive role in infantry combat throughout the war.
For a scale modelling context, German MG teams offer excellent opportunities for dynamic dioramas — prone firing positions, advancing crews with ammunition belts, or defensive tripod setups — complete with realistic field gear and weathered uniforms.
