Mars 1/72 U.S. Chemical Mortar Team WWII # 72146
The U.S. Chemical Mortar Team of WWII operated the powerful 4.2-inch mortar, one of the most effective and respected infantry support weapons of the war.
Originally developed for firing chemical shells, the weapon quickly proved devastating when used with high-explosive and smoke rounds, becoming a key asset in U.S. Army operations across Europe and the Pacific.
These teams served within the United States Army Chemical Corps, particularly in specialised Chemical Mortar Battalions attached to infantry divisions.
The Weapon – 4.2-Inch Mortar
- M2 4.2-inch mortar
- Calibre: 107mm
- Capable of firing HE, smoke, white phosphorus, and originally chemical rounds
- Highly accurate with a strong plunging fire capability
Despite its origins, chemical shells were rarely used in combat during WWII.
Instead, the mortar gained fame for its precise high-explosive fire, often delivering rapid and concentrated bombardments to support advancing troops or break up enemy counterattacks.
Team Composition
A typical mortar team included:
- Squad leader
- Gunner
- Assistant gunner
- Ammunition handlers
- Fire direction support personnel
Operating the 4.2-inch mortar required coordination and strength, as both the baseplate and ammunition were heavy.
Crews worked quickly to adjust range and elevation, maintaining steady fire under combat conditions.
Battlefield Role
U.S. Chemical Mortar Battalions were heavily engaged in:
- The Italian Campaign
- The Normandy landings and breakout
- The Battle of the Bulge
- Pacific island operations
Their firepower was especially valued for neutralising fortified positions, bunkers, and enemy troop concentrations.
Infantry units often praised the chemical mortar teams for their accuracy and responsiveness under fire.
Historical Significance
Although the term “chemical” suggests gas warfare, these teams became known primarily for delivering reliable, hard-hitting conventional support.
Their contribution to Allied infantry success was substantial, yet they remain a lesser-known element of the U.S. Army’s WWII forces.
For scale modellers, a U.S. Chemical Mortar Team makes an excellent diorama centrepiece — with detailed crew poses, ammunition crates, and a realistically weathered heavy mortar setup.
