Mars 1/72 Italian Paratroopers WWII # 72145
Italian paratroopers of the Second World War were among the most highly trained and determined troops in the Italian armed forces.
Known collectively as the Paracadutisti, they earned a formidable reputation for discipline, courage, and resilience — particularly during the North African campaign.
The most famous formation was the 184th Paratroopers Division "Folgore", originally formed for a planned airborne assault on Malta.
When that invasion was cancelled, the division was instead deployed to North Africa in 1942.
Elite Training & Organisation
Italian paratroopers underwent rigorous physical and tactical training, including:
- Airborne assault preparation
- Small-unit infantry tactics
- Anti-tank warfare
- Defensive strongpoint construction
Unlike many Italian infantry units, the Folgore division was well-motivated and cohesively trained, composed largely of volunteers.
North Africa – El Alamein
At the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942, the Folgore division fought as elite ground infantry rather than airborne troops.
Facing overwhelming British armour and artillery, they held defensive positions with remarkable tenacity, often destroying tanks using anti-tank guns, mines, and close-range tactics.
Despite eventual encirclement and surrender due to lack of supplies, their resistance earned respect even from opposing Allied commanders.
Equipment & Appearance
Italian paratroopers were equipped with:
- Camouflage smocks (notably Telo Mimetico patterns)
- Light helmets or field caps
- Beretta submachine guns and Carcano rifles
- Breda machine guns
- Anti-tank weapons
Their distinctive desert uniforms and camouflage gear make them a particularly striking subject for scale modelling and diorama work.
Historical Significance
Although Italy’s overall wartime performance was mixed, its paratroopers stood out for professionalism and fighting spirit.
The Folgore’s stand at El Alamein became symbolic of elite Italian resistance under extreme conditions.
For modellers, Italian WWII paratroopers offer dynamic posing opportunities — desert defensive positions, anti-tank ambushes, or Sicily 1943 urban fighting scenes — with unique uniform details that add character to any WWII display.
