The T-55 Al Faw, also known as the “Enigma”, was an Iraqi modification of the Soviet-designed T-55 tank, developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s in preparation for the Gulf War.

This variant, based on a Polish-made T-55 chassis, featured improvised armor enhancements intended to provide greater protection against modern anti-tank weapons.

The most distinctive feature of the Enigma is its bolt-on composite armor blocks, mounted across the turret, glacis plate, and hull sides.

These angular, spaced modules were intended to resist shaped-charge warheads, such as those fired by TOW missiles and RPGs.

Despite their crude appearance, these modifications represented Iraq’s efforts to adapt Cold War-era armor to face more advanced NATO threats.

Underneath the added armor, the tank retained the core features of the Polish-built T-55, including a 100mm rifled gun, a 580 hp diesel engine, and traditional Soviet-style systems.

While mechanically similar to its Warsaw Pact counterparts, the Enigma's field modifications gave it a distinctive battlefield silhouette, particularly during the 1991 Gulf War, where it was used in the defense of Kuwait and southern Iraq.

Captured examples were studied by Western forces and now reside in several military museums around the world.
