The P-47D-15RA Thunderbolt was a powerful variant of Republic’s renowned WWII fighter, known for its ruggedness, firepower, and versatility.

As part of the D-series improvements, the -15RA block introduced a key innovation: underwing pylons that allowed the aircraft to carry external fuel tanks or ordnance, dramatically increasing its range and combat load.

Powered by the robust Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the P-47D-15RA maintained exceptional high-altitude performance while offering the toughness to survive heavy damage and keep flying.

Its armament of eight .50 caliber machine guns, combined with the ability to carry bombs and rockets, made it a formidable fighter-bomber across both the European and Pacific theaters.

The RA suffix indicated production by Republic’s Evansville, Indiana plant, which manufactured many of the Thunderbolts used by U.S. Army Air Forces.

Pilots admired the aircraft for its stability in a dive, reliable engine, and sheer survivability in combat.

The P-47D-15RA was a key step in the Thunderbolt’s evolution—balancing long-range capability with devastating offensive power, and cementing its role as one of the most effective multi-role aircraft of the war.
