The LRDG F30 Gun Truck was a key vehicle used by the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG), one of the most daring and unconventional Allied reconnaissance and raiding units of World War II.
Operating deep behind enemy lines in the vast North African desert, the LRDG relied on rugged, heavily modified trucks like the F30 to conduct reconnaissance, sabotage, and intelligence-gathering missions.
Based on the Ford 30 cwt (1.5-ton) Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) truck, the F30 was stripped down to reduce weight and adapted for extreme desert conditions. Its open body design made it easy to modify, often featuring sand tires, reinforced suspensions, extra fuel and water stowage, and heavy armament.
Typically, the gun truck variant was fitted with weapons such as Lewis guns, Vickers K machine guns, or Browning .50 caliber machine guns—sometimes all at once.
The F30 gun truck combined high mobility, surprising firepower, and long-range endurance—ideal for fast hit-and-run tactics across harsh, enemy-held terrain.
Crewed by small, highly skilled teams, these vehicles played a vital role in undermining Axis supply lines, gathering battlefield intelligence, and supporting the Special Air Service (SAS) in joint operations.
The LRDG F30 Gun Truck remains a symbol of ingenuity, adaptability, and elite warfare in one of the most unforgiving theaters of WWII.
