Details

The USS Hornet (CV-8) was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1941.

She is best remembered for launching the daring Doolittle Raid on Japan in April 1942, the first American air strike on the Japanese homeland.

Later that year, Hornet played a crucial role in the Battle of Midway, helping secure a decisive victory against the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Despite her successes, she was heavily damaged and sunk during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in October 1942.

Though in service for less than a year, Hornet’s bold actions left a lasting legacy in naval history.
