The 7.5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 40 (PaK 40) was the backbone of German anti-tank defences during the Second World War.
Developed by Rheinmetall and entering service in 1942, it was designed to counter the increasingly well-armoured Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and KV-1.
The PaK 40 featured a 75 mm L/46 gun mounted on a split-trail carriage, allowing a wide traverse and stable firing platform.
Firing armour-piercing and high-explosive rounds, it was capable of penetrating up to 132 mm of armour at 500 metres, making it deadly against most Allied armour throughout the war.
Despite weighing nearly 1,500 kg, it could still be manhandled into position by its crew when necessary, and its relatively low profile made it harder to spot on the battlefield.
Deployed in both static defensive lines and mobile formations, the PaK 40 served on every front from the Eastern Front to North Africa and Western Europe.
Reliable, powerful, and adaptable, it became one of the most widely produced anti-tank guns of the war, with over 23,000 built.
Its effectiveness ensured it remained in German service until the end of the conflict and even saw post-war use in other nations’ armies.
