The Nakajima J1N1-S Gekko, known to the Allies by the reporting name “Irving,” was a highly capable Japanese night fighter developed during the later stages of the Second World War.

Originally designed as a long-range escort fighter, the aircraft was soon adapted into a specialised night interceptor as Japan faced increasing night-time bombing raids.

The late version of the J1N1-S reflected the refinement of this role. Equipped with upward- and downward-firing cannons in a configuration similar to the German “Schräge Musik” system, the Gekko was able to attack enemy bombers from below—an effective tactic against heavily defended aircraft such as the B-24 Liberator.

This innovative armament allowed Japanese crews to approach undetected and strike vulnerable areas of their targets under cover of darkness.

Powered by twin engines, the Gekko offered good range and stability, making it well-suited for extended patrols and interception missions.

Later variants often incorporated improved radar or detection equipment, enhancing their effectiveness in night operations, although Japanese radar technology remained relatively limited compared to that of the Allies.

With its distinctive twin-engine layout and specialised armament, the J1N1-S became one of Japan’s most effective night fighters.

The late version in particular demonstrates how the aircraft evolved to meet the changing demands of aerial warfare, playing a vital role in the defence of the Japanese home islands against increasingly frequent and intense night bombing raids.
