The Panzerkampfwagen II Ausf. B (Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. B) was an early-war German light tank developed in the 1930s as a stopgap design while more advanced models like the Panzer III and IV were still in development.
It featured a 14.5-ton chassis, a 20 mm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon, and a 7.92 mm MG34 coaxial machine gun, providing modest firepower for infantry support and reconnaissance roles.
The Ausf. B incorporated improvements over the initial Ausf. A variant, including a more powerful engine (Maybach HL62 TR) and enhanced suspension for better cross-country mobility.
A notable adaptation used during the early stages of Operation Barbarossa and in North Africa was the attachment of a fuel trailer to increase the tank’s operational range.
This trailer, towed behind the tank, carried additional fuel supplies—vital for long-range advances across vast terrain where supply lines were stretched thin.
The trailer typically had a simple, rugged design with cylindrical fuel drums mounted on a two-wheel chassis, connected by a tow arm.
Though the Pz.Kpfw. II was quickly outclassed in direct combat by better-armored Allied tanks, it remained in service in secondary roles such as reconnaissance, training, and support.
The addition of the fuel trailer highlights the logistical improvisations made by the Wehrmacht to sustain mobile warfare during the early and mid-years of the conflict.
