The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23BN was the dedicated ground-attack and fighter-bomber variant of the versatile MiG-23 family — designed to deliver precision strikes at high speed and low altitude during the height of the Cold War.

Developed from the MiG-23B prototype, the “BN” (Blizhniy – Tactical, Nazemnyy – Ground Attack) incorporated a redesigned nose section, removing the radar of the interceptor versions in favour of an optical sighting and navigation system optimised for air-to-ground missions.

Powered by the Tumansky R-29B-300 turbojet, the MiG-23BN offered blistering acceleration and excellent performance at low level, capable of exceeding Mach 1.3 at sea level and Mach 1.75 at altitude.

Its variable-geometry wings allowed pilots to adjust sweep angle in flight — ensuring stable handling during take-off and landing, yet providing high-speed efficiency during attack runs.

Entering service in the early 1970s, the MiG-23BN became a key strike platform for numerous Warsaw Pact and allied nations, including the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and India.

It carried a formidable payload of bombs, rockets, and missiles, complemented by a built-in 23 mm GSh-23L cannon for close-support missions.

With its aggressive stance, swing-wing silhouette, and reputation for raw power, the MiG-23BN embodied the Soviet approach to tactical air support — fast, rugged, and capable of operating from dispersed forward bases.

Even today, it remains a favourite among aviation historians and scale modellers for its distinctive appearance and complex engineering.
