RS Models 1/72 Bell RP-39Q-22-BE # 94024
The Bell RP-39Q-22-BE Airacobra was a late-production reconnaissance variant of the famous P-39 Airacobra, developed by Bell Aircraft during the Second World War.
Built at Bell’s Buffalo, New York (BE) plant, the Q-series represented the final refinement of the Airacobra design.
Unlike earlier P-39 variants, the RP-39Q was configured for photo-reconnaissance duties, with its heavy nose armament removed to reduce weight and make space for cameras and additional equipment.
This modification improved handling characteristics and extended operational range, making the aircraft well suited for low- to medium-altitude tactical reconnaissance, battlefield observation, and artillery spotting.
The Airacobra’s distinctive layout—featuring a mid-mounted Allison V-1710 engine, a tricycle landing gear, and car-style side doors—remained unchanged.
However, the Q-series benefited from improved systems reliability and refined aerodynamics.
While the P-39 was less effective at high altitude due to the lack of a turbo-supercharger, it proved highly capable at lower levels where most reconnaissance missions were flown.
RP-39Q aircraft were primarily operated by the United States Army Air Forces, with some airframes also supplied to Allied nations.
They played a valuable but often overlooked role, providing timely intelligence in support of ground operations during the later stages of the war.
With its unique configuration and late-war refinements, the Bell RP-39Q-22-BE represents an interesting and historically significant variation of the Airacobra, offering modellers an appealing subject distinct from the more common fighter-armed versions.
