The DFS 230 was a German assault glider designed to deliver troops with pinpoint accuracy directly onto enemy objectives

. Its most famous combat use was during Unternehmen Rösselsprung (“Operation Knight’s Move”) on 25 May 1944, a daring airborne assault aimed at capturing or killing Yugoslav partisan leader Josip Broz Tito at Drvar, Bosnia.

During the operation, DFS 230 gliders towed by Luftwaffe aircraft silently released over the target area, allowing Fallschirmjäger and SS paratroopers to land troops and heavy weapons directly into the town and surrounding terrain.

The glider’s robust design enabled it to carry up to ten fully equipped soldiers, or a combination of troops and light equipment, into extremely confined landing zones.

At Drvar, the DFS 230s landed under intense ground fire, often in rugged, uneven terrain. Despite heavy losses and fierce resistance from Yugoslav Partisans, the glider-borne assault demonstrated both the bold tactical ambition and the high risk of airborne special operations.

Although the mission ultimately failed to capture Tito, the DFS 230’s role in Rösselsprung remains one of the most dramatic examples of glider warfare in the Second World War.

Finished in late-war Luftwaffe camouflage and often marked with invasion stripes or tactical codes, DFS 230 gliders from Operation Rösselsprung represent a unique and historically significant subject, combining airborne forces, special operations, and one of the war’s most audacious raids.
