The LRDG F30 was a vital vehicle used by the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG), an elite British reconnaissance and raiding unit that operated in the North African desert during World War II.
Based on the Ford 30 cwt (1.5-ton) Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) truck, the F30 was adapted for long-range patrols in some of the harshest terrain on earth.
Modified to suit the extreme heat and sandy conditions of the desert, the F30 was stripped of unnecessary parts to reduce weight and increase reliability.
It featured wide sand tires, extended fuel and water capacity, and open bodywork for ease of loading and operation.
The truck’s rugged chassis made it ideal for the LRDG’s deep-penetration missions behind enemy lines.
The F30 was often heavily armed with a mix of Vickers K machine guns, Lewis guns, or Browning .303s, mounted on ring or pintle mounts.
These trucks were not just transport—many were configured as gun trucks, capable of delivering devastating fire in hit-and-run attacks on Axis convoys, airfields, and supply depots.
Crewed by small teams of highly trained men, the LRDG’s F30 trucks symbolized mobility, improvisation, and the daring spirit of desert warfare.
Their legacy lives on as some of the most iconic vehicles of Allied special operations in WWII.
