The English Electric Lightning F.6 was the ultimate and most capable operational variant of Britain’s first and only Mach 2 interceptor, representing the peak of RAF Lightning development during the Cold War.

Introduced in the mid-1960s, the F.6 was designed to overcome the limitations of earlier versions by significantly improving range and endurance.

It featured a redesigned wing with a kinked leading edge and a distinctive enlarged ventral fuel tank, allowing it to remain on combat air patrol for longer periods—crucial for defending UK airspace against high-altitude Soviet bombers.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines, the Lightning F.6 delivered astonishing performance, capable of climbing almost vertically and reaching speeds in excess of Mach 2.

Its rapid reaction capability made it ideal for Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) duties, where it could be scrambled and airborne in minutes.

Armament consisted of two Aden 30 mm cannon and a mix of Firestreak or Red Top air-to-air missiles, giving it formidable firepower for its era.

Later in service, the F.6 adopted a green and grey camouflage scheme with light grey undersides, replacing the earlier natural metal finish.

Serving well into the late 1980s, the English Electric Lightning F.6 remains one of the most iconic jet fighters ever to fly—celebrated for its raw power, dramatic climb rate, and unmistakable silhouette.
