The Hotchkiss H-39 was a French light tank developed in the late 1930s as an improved version of the earlier H-35, designed to provide better mobility and enhanced combat performance.

Entering service shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, it became one of the key armoured vehicles of the French Army during the 1940 campaign.

Externally similar to its predecessor, the H-39 featured a more powerful engine, which significantly improved its speed and cross-country capability.

Its compact size and relatively thick armour for a light tank made it well suited to infantry support roles, where protection and durability were often more important than outright speed.

Armed with a 37mm gun, later variants of the H-39 offered improved firepower compared to earlier models, allowing it to better engage enemy armour and fortified positions.

However, like many French tanks of the period, it was hampered by a one-man turret, requiring the commander to take on multiple roles, including aiming and firing the gun, which reduced overall combat efficiency.

Despite these limitations, the H-39 proved to be a robust and reliable vehicle.

Following the fall of France, many were captured and reused by German forces, who employed them in a variety of secondary roles, from occupation duties to training and security operations.

The Hotchkiss H-39 stands as a representative example of French armoured design in the early war years—well protected and mechanically sound, yet constrained by design choices that would soon be overtaken by the rapidly evolving demands of modern armoured warfare.
