The T26E4 “Super Pershing” (Pilot #1) was an experimental American heavy tank developed late in the Second World War as an enhanced version of the Pershing series.

Created to counter heavily armoured German tanks such as the Tiger II, it combined increased firepower with additional protection in an effort to improve battlefield effectiveness.

The most notable feature of the Super Pershing was its powerful long-barrelled 90mm T15E1 gun, designed to deliver significantly greater penetration than the standard Pershing’s armament.

This upgrade allowed it to engage heavily armoured targets at longer ranges, addressing one of the key challenges faced by Allied tank crews in the later stages of the war.

Pilot #1 was further modified in the field with improvised additional armour.

Crews added extra steel plates—reportedly including salvaged armour from destroyed German vehicles—to reinforce the front of the turret and hull.

These modifications gave the tank a distinctive, rugged appearance and improved its survivability against enemy fire.

Despite these enhancements, the added weight placed strain on the vehicle’s mobility and mechanical reliability.

As a result, the Super Pershing remained a limited experimental design rather than entering full-scale production.

Deployed in Europe in 1945, the T26E4 saw limited combat service, where it demonstrated the potential of its upgraded firepower.

Although it arrived too late to influence the overall outcome of the war, it provided valuable insight into heavy tank development and the balance between protection, mobility, and armament.

The T26E4 Super Pershing stands as a fascinating example of wartime innovation and improvisation, bridging the gap between standard medium tanks and the heavier, more specialised designs that would follow in the post-war era.
